I’m sorry – this report is pretentiously silly! Adapting to climate change is almost the least important reason I can think of to manage the risks of extreme events. The impacts of climate change will be local, and are as yet not defined (and, as we have seen with the recent warm winters and the reduction in cases of influenza, perhaps actually positive). We have models – that are unvalidated and unable to predict the near future accurately – giving us hypothetical worst cases for hypothetical futures that are almost certainly unrealistic. Do we really need to invoke the climate change shibboleth in order to get us to do what we should be doing anyway – managing our risks? Aren’t our lives, our fortunes and our futures far more important drivers?
