Basic Info on CA Drought

Slow-onset disasters usually do not get much attention, and the CA drought is no exception.  But for those of you who are concerned with such matters and are in for the long term, here is a website that the State of CA set up that provides ongoing information about the drought.

Thanks to Martin Kalis for the link.

  1. Interesting point. Does the disaster designation help garner more attention to the phenomenon or does it turn people off? I would be interested in hearing from other readers.

  2. I once attended a talk by one of Australia’s water policy people, who made an eye-opening comment about their drought. She said that they had stopped classifying droughts as disasters, because they happen regularly and can be anticipated if not precisely predicted. It makes a lot of sense to me for places like California or the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia where I live. If you have a naturally fluctuating range of precipitation, and water shortages primarily have to do with over-development and optimistic management, let’s just stop calling them disasters. Labeling them that way entrenches the erroneous thinking. On the other hand, I can see how, whatever you call it, the California drought may reach emergency proportions and have to be dealt with that way.
