Resetting the Approach to COVID-19. As the coronavirus pandemic continues to grip the United States and we see the number of cases rise, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) has released The Way Forward on COVID-19: A Road Map to Reset the Nation’s Approach to the Pandemic.

The AAMC is made up of 172 accredited medical schools in the U.S. and Canada, and has over 400 teaching hospitals and medical systems. Having medical professionals working on the frontlines of the pandemic, AAMC proposes an evidence-based approach to tackling COVID-19 that centers around 9 immediate actions to be taken:

    • I was surprised to NOT see a recommendation for improved data standards; collection, processing and dissemination. What good are better criteria for their recommendations 4 and 5 if the data are still poorly collected and inconsistently reported? The CDC’s “guidance” on data collection has led to a situation in which uncertainty about the true state of affairs abounds.
    • Recommendation 4 may not be legal – federal enforcement of local action.
    • I’m not sure that expanding health insurance accomplishes anything relative to Covid-19. Similarly resolving health care inequities. It is much more important to resolve health inequities; health care plays only a small role in health. Solving the environmental and food issues in poor neighborhoods – improving the health of the poor – will do much more than further futzing with health care.
