Claire,
Maybe “new” isn’t quite the right word for this. The Portuguese Bend landslide has been causing problems since 1956. During this time, it has influenced the legal and policy environment around landslides, including the first Geologic Hazard Abatement district. It is amazing in its persistent slow movement. Entire scientific fields have developed during these same 70 years, but we are still struggling to slow down the Portuguese Bend slide.
