A friend and colleague provided me with this link to an organization that she said did some excellent work in New Orleans after Hurricanes Sandy , Wilma, and Rita: The Unified New Orleans Plan by American Speaks.
NOTE: Be sure to read the additional information provided by Laurie Johnson in the comment section. She actually participated in the planning process.
Hi Claire and Recovery Diva subscribers. America Speaks was indeed a critical part of the Unified New Orleans Plan Process. They had a key role in designing and leading 2 of the 3 community congresses that were held for the citywide portion of the UNOP process. However, this was just one key part of the UNOP citywide planning and communications efforts and many other entities and consultants were involved. The UNOP planning process included both a citywide planning effort and simultaneous district/neighborhood planning efforts. The UNOP process was funded by a consortia of philanthropic organizations – notably the Rockefeller Foundation and the Greater New Orleans Foundation. It’s oversight came from a community support organization that included representation from the New Orleans Mayor’s office, City Council and Planning Commission and the funders. The firm Concordia served as the overall UNOP project coordinator and led the communications efforts. Villavaso + Henry Consulting led the citywide planning team of which (full disclosure), I was a member. And there were 4 consulting teams that led the district planning efforts and they were supported by several neighborhood consultants. Unfortunately, the website that contained the full set of plans – citywide and district plans – is no longer operational. If you would like to read more about UNOP and the other recovery planning efforts in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina, please refer to the book, Clear As Mud: Planning for the Rebuilding of New Orleans, by Robert Olshansky and myself https://www.taylorfrancis.com/books/mono/10.4324/9781351179713/clear-mud-robert-olshansky-laurie-johnson
Thanks for supplying the additional details. Very helpful.
