Every time I read a story about our climbing losses from extreme weather that drags in “climate change,” I am reminded of Byron’s “And if I laugh at any mortal thing, ’tis that I may not weep.” Folks, even the IPCC is backing away from the idea that climate change is “causing” extreme weather (in their most recent report, they downgraded this claim from “likely” to “more likely than not”). To paraphrase Cassius, our rising costs of severe weather events lies not in our climate but ourselves. We are the ones directly responsible for these losses:
• Building in places we shouldn’t be building.
• Putting up buildings that can’t withstand the perils they face.
• Staying in harm’s way when prudence would dictate leaving.
Let’s quit diffusing blame to the evil utilities, or those evil people who drive their cars to work, or the evil chemical companies, or [insert your own villain], and take a hard look at that person in the mirror and say, “the fault is not in our stars, dear Brutus, but in ourselves.”
Hi John: I knew this would get a rise out of you!

I guess I’m just too predictable! Have a great Thanksgiving.
It’s good to have differing views.
Have a nice holiday.
