New research by the University of Otago maps different levels of poverty across New Zealand and shows that Christchurch is better off than it was in 2006.
The number of people living in the least-deprived parts of Christchurch has grown by about 13,000, while the number in the most deprived areas has fallen by about the same number, the latest deprivation index by the University of Otago reveals.

A friend in NZ asked how unusual the change was and I mentioned the NOLA example to him. I did not know about the suburban changes. Given the fact that folks from NOLA relocated to almost 40 states, and some settled permanently, I figured that outmigration was a big factor.
Really interesting. Similar phenomena observed in NOLA. However, digging deeper there indicates that poverty just moved to the suburbs. Wonder if it’s the same in CCNZ.
