  1. This Study is incredibly important!

The Study shows that while we often do calculate the loss of life directly attributed to poorly designed and constructed buildings and infrastructure when natural events take place, there is a clear increase in mortality indirectly caused by our poor planning, development and decision-making practices in areas subject to the natural and foreseeable processes of Planet Earth. These foreseeable processes often referred to as Natural Hazards typically cause loss of life, misery, suffering, waste of resources and environmental despoliation, because we as a society did a poor job of planning and development. Now, we now can document additional increases in mortality due to such disasters.
We really should not need yet another reason to practice Safe Development, so that we achieve Disaster Risk Reduction as opposed to our current development practices which are rapidly making the foreseeable consequences of natural events vastly worse than they should be.

However, apparently we do need additional reasons to plan and develop safely; because right now our planning and development practices are making future disasters even worse than they otherwise will be. Climate Change/Variability will only make our situation even more dire, if we do not do a much better job of Climate Adaptation & Hazard Mitigation.
