A Review of 2022 Disasters

From HSToday: Record Drought Gripped Much of the U.S. in 2022, a Year of 18 Billion-Dollar Disasters. Hurricane Ian was the most costly event of 2022 at $112.9 billion, and ranks as the third most costly hurricane on record (since 1980) for the U.S., behind Hurricane Katrina (2005) and Hurricane Harvey (2017).

  1. As always, the implication is that the “near-record” number of climate disasters is due to climate change. It’s not – the frequency and magnitude of storms has not really changed. Any change in the number of billion-dollar disasters is indeed man-made – reflecting our propensity to put assets in harm’s way. If the 1938 Long Island Express, for example, were to occur today, it would blow past even Katrina (today’s Long Island would be wiped out).
