National Health Security and Preparedness Index

National Health Security and Preparedness Index for 2016.

I had to hunt around for the details contained in the report. This summary chart provides an overview and a national map.

My home state, Virginia, ranks slightly above the national average, but below the national average for the component called Community Planning and Engagement. As a staff at the local OEM, that is not good news.

Thanks to Arnold Bogis for helping me find VA in the index.

Rising Sea Levels – focus on natural changes

From the Homeland Security New Wire, this article on possible natural changes that might occur: Up to 70 percent of Northeast U.S. coast likely to adapt to rising seas.

Much of the coast from Maine to Virginia is more likely to change than to simply drown in response to rising seas during the next seventy years or so, according to a new study led by the U.S. Geological Survey. The study is based on a new computer model that captures the potential of the Northeast coast to change, driven by geological and biological forces, in ways that will reshape coastal landscapes.

Don’t Forget to Consider Historic Preservation

Historic preservation often neglected in disaster plans

Many communities fail to take historic preservation into account when planning for natural disasters, risking a loss of heritage and critical engines of the local economy in the event of catastrophe. Thousands of historic sites are left exposed to risk from floods and storms. “A lot of cultural and historic resources worldwide are at risk when natural hazards strike,” said the author of a recent study. “And even though we know this, very few resources are dedicated to protecting them.”
